1945 oil on panel painting of WWII seaplane to go up for auction on May 21 by EstateOfMind

MIDDLETOWN, NY – A two-session auction featuring militaria, fine art, antiques, postcards, coins and Mid-Century Modern jewelry will be held on Saturday, May 21 by EstateOfMind. The sale will take place live at the EstateOfMind gallery located at 195 Derby Road in Middletown, as well as online. Internet auctions will be facilitated by LiveAuctioneers.com. Session 1, starting at 11 a.m. EST, will be all about militaria and firearms. Winchester Model 52 rifles and target rifles will be offered; rare Colt SA revolvers; and an 1863 Civil War letter signed by General A. E. Burnside, with contents from Burnside Rifles. Sold in Session 2 will be a 1945 oil on panel painting of a WWII seaplane with clouds signed by artist Eric Sloane.

Weapons of note will include a rare circa 1940 Winchester Model 75 bolt-action rifle with BSA 20-150 X scope (ser. #7591), with original box and papers; a rare circa 1920 Colt .45 single action revolver (ser. # 348185), with a barrel measuring 7 ½ inches long; a beautiful circa 1950/1960 Colt .45 single action nickel-plated revolver (ser. # 45640) with a 4 ½ inch barrel; and five Winchester Model 52 rifles.

Session 2, which will follow immediately, will include elements from Tuxedo Park and Hamptonburgh, NY; Oceanside, LI; and Warwick, NY, with station wagons including a 1972 Chevrolet Malibu with 94,132 miles on the clock; a 1971 Chevrolet Impala convertible; and other cars. In total, more than 650 lots will be auctioned in Session 2, encompassing several categories.

Mid-Century Modern furniture and lighting will feature names such as Noguchi, Bruno Mathsson, Carl-Axel Acking, Knoll and Bertoia. The huge collection of postcards contains over 12,000 pieces. Also on sale will be Victorian cast iron garden furniture, Oriental rugs, original artwork, sports memorabilia, Meissen china, Americana, clocks, autographs and ephemera.

The artwork category will be highlighted by an engraving by James McNeil Whistler titled The Red dress, with autographed letters; a scroll of Buddhist purity; a circa 1951 abstract watercolor painting signed by Albert Alcalay, 9 inches by 50 inches; and a circa 1850 oil on canvas signed by Australian artist Nicolai Habbe (1827-1889) titled Pick up flowers.

Fans of Mid-Century Modern will be treated to Florence Knoll three-drawer teak/laminate chests of drawers; a Hans Wegner drop-leaf sewing table; six 1959 NK-Incredning Carl-Axel Acking armchairs designed for the Swedish Embassy in Tokyo; Bertoia diamond wire patio chairs and a pair of Pollock leather armchairs for Knoll.

Watches and jewelry will include a rare 18k yellow gold Art Deco pomegranate brooch with hinged shell circa 1940 made in France with hallmarks; a contemporary modern leopard brooch in 18k yellow gold, stones, shells and diamonds from the 1980s, signed Asch Grossbardt; a Rolex Observatory/Chronometer in 18 kt white and yellow gold, circa 1920; and a set of six vintage estate watches, including examples from Omega, Harmon and Movado, all circa 1940 to 1960.

Americana will include a Newport School walnut and fruitwood wing/armchair with original muslin, horsehair and sackcloth and remnants of the original upholstery, circa 1770; a cast iron “Green Tree” fire insurance plaque, circa 1805; 18th and 19th century country cabinets, blanket boxes and painted miniatures; and a few 18th-century painted Windsor chairs.

The coins will be highlighted by a rare 1877 US $3 Indian Princess gold coin, AU-55; one American Peace Silver Dollar 1927-P; and a collection of uncirculated Morgan silver dollars. Sporting goods will include a rare hand-sewn 19th century figure-8 baseball; a copy of the book All my Octobers, signed by Mickey Mantle, with COA; and many vintage gem-mint cards.

Autographs and ephemera will include a typewritten letter from Charlie Chaplin, signed and dated November 1953; a request for military leave from Napoleon Bonaparte dated November 3, 1807; a postcard autographed by Enrico Caruso from 1905; a handwritten letter from Bram Stoker, Lyceum Theatre, dated February 13, 1883; and a letter signed Gilbert & Sullivan, D’Oyly Opera Company, circa 1891-1900.

The decorative accessories will be numerous and will include an exceptional baroque chandelier with 8 arms in silver and copper signed “GSS”, circa 1905-1910; a pair of classic 800 silver candelabras with 5 lights, hallmarked; two 19th century Louis Vuitton trunks; a pair of 19th or 20th century Italian Carrara marble guardian angels, 40 inches high; a blue and white Chinese “Double Bonheur” temple jar, 18th/19th century, 43 cm high; and oriental rugs.

Clocks will include Willard’s circa 1800 patent presentation banjo clock, 41 inches tall; a circa 1830 Samuel Terry column clock; a Birge & Fuller column clock circa 1820; a 20th-century Emory & Douglas steamboat clock and barometer; a John McEwen clock in nickel and bronze circa 1890 Steam Gauge Valve Co. (Boston); and an Ithaca rosewood double dial calendar clock.

Garden furniture will include a rare Victorian Grand Tour cast iron urn from around 1870 featuring a Greek bacchanalian procession; two Gothic cast iron garden benches around 1880; and a pair of cast stone and shell garden pedestal urns from around the early 1880s. Other items of interest will include a Leica 111G camera with additional lenses; a set of 13 assorted 20th century modern Danish vases, signed Rorstrand; and a rare Isamu Noguchi cherry and fiber table lamp, 16 inches high, circa 1940/50.
