The Rockport Garden Club welcomes Matt Carter, owner of Green Island Stonework in Topsham, as its November speaker.

The meeting is set for Thursday, November 3 at 1 p.m. at the Rockport Opera House. It’s free for the public.

Carter built his first dry stone wall in 1992 on a horse farm in upstate New York. After which, he studied dry stone walls with master craftsmen in the United States, Canada and England.

In 24 years, Matt has built or repaired over 1,500 tonnes, or 3 million pounds, of dry stone walls. He has worked in Maine for the past 16 years designing and creating stone walls, patios, fireplaces, and outdoor spaces, using primarily stone native to Maine.

Carter is certified by DSWA as a Dry Stone Instructor and occasionally teaches dry stone wall workshops in Maine and throughout New England. He will talk about the history of dry stone walls in New England and explain how dry stone walls are built and why some last and others fail.
